Curriculum at a Glance

Teaching and learning is at the core of what makes a good school system great. The curriculum, what we want our students to know and be able to do by the time they graduate, forms the foundation for student learning in the North Branford Public Schools. The curriculum includes what is taught (content), when it is taught (scope and sequence), how it is taught (instruction/programs), what will be used (resources), and how we will know students have learned (assessment).

In the NBPS use of information, communication and multi-media systems are integrated across the curriculum and character development is valued, nurtured, modeled and interwoven at all grade levels. Thinking at higher levels and problem solving in groups and as individuals are emphasized and expected.

The NBPS curriculum is a standards-based curriculum that is rooted in National and CT state standards and CT state frameworks. Student mastery of standards is consistently monitored in order to increase student achievement and improve teaching and learning.

Curriculum guides are consistently under scrutiny through the use of our Curriculum Management Cycle. This four year cycle keeps each curriculum up-to-date as it passes through the phases of Review, Development, Implementation and Evaluation. Each phase of the cycle has specific work that needs to be completed by teams of teachers across the grades. Each phase of the cycle is tightly connected to the NBPS budget to ensure that what is needed to implement the curriculum is made available to teachers and students.

While the complete guide is comprehensive, an Essential Curriculum for each subject area has been developed with the informational needs of parents in mind. Through the use of this website, parents have the opportunity to become familiar with either:

• Student expectations across the grades PK-12 in one curriculum, (See below)
• Student expectations at a selected grade level in each area of the curriculum.

This website is under construction. If you do not find the Essential Curriculum you are looking for, the curriculum has not as yet passed through the implementation phase of the Curriculum Management Cycle. If a parent would prefer to examine the entire curriculum guide, the documents are available at the Central Office (TVES), the Curriculum Office (NBHS), and at each school's Library Media Center.
